The crowning jewel
of Indo-Islamic architecture, the Taj Mahal is one of the worlds
most beautiful and beloved structures. The monument was built
in
Agra, India, for Mumtaz Mahal, the favorite wife of Mughal emperor Shah
Jahan. Construction of the tomb began in 1632 and employed more than
20,000 laborers for 20 years. During the reign of Shah Jahan, the
structure was known simply as the rauza, the tomb. Later, the mausoleum
would be called the Taj Mahal, a derivative of the name Mumtaz Mahal.
According to the French jeweler Tavernier, who claimed to had seen the
construction of the Taj Mahal from beginning to end, the white marble
monument was erected at a time when the resources of the Mughal Empire
were such that only the finest materials were utilized for the structure
and its embellishment and when the quality of the craftsmanship
available in northern India was probably superior to that of any
previous period. Many architects have rated it as the most perfect of all buildings standing on earth. Three artists designed it: a Persian, an Italian, and a Frenchman. But the design is completely Mohammedan. Even the skilled artisans who built it were brought in from Baghdad, Constantinople, and other centers of the Muslim faith. For 22 years more than 20,000 workmen were forced to build the Taj. The Maharaja of Jaipur sent the marble as a gift to Shah Jahan. The building and its surroundings cost more than $200,000,000 in todays currency. Passing through a high wall, one comes suddently upon the Taj - raised upon a marble platform, and framed on either side by handsome mosques and stately minarets. In the foreground spacious gardens enclose a pool in whose waters the inverted palace becomes a quivering dream. Every portion of the structure is of white marble, precious metals, or costly stones. The building is a complex figure of twelve sides, four of which are portals. A slender minaret rises at each corner, and the roof is a massive spired dome. The main entrance, once guarded with solid silver gates, is a maze of marble embroidery; inlaid in the wall in jeweled script are qotations from the Koran, one of which invites the "pure in heart" to enter "the gardens of Paradise." Wonder of the World To people the world over, the Taj Mahal, mausoleum of Mughal Emperor shah Jana's chief wife, Mumtaz Mahal, is synonymous with India. Its curving, gently swelling dome and the square base upon which its rests so lightly is a familiar image from hundreds of brochures and travel books. The Taj is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular buildings of the world. Renowned for its architectural magnificence and aesthetic beauty, it counts among man's proudest creations and is invariably included in the list of the world's foremost wonders. As a tomb, it has no match upon earth, for mortal remains have never been housed in greater grandeur. As Mumtaz Mahal lay dying, she asked four promises from the emperor: first, that he build the Taj; second, that he should marry again; third, that he be kind to their children; and fourth, that he visit the tomb on her death anniversary. He kept the first and second promises. Construction began in 1631 and was completed in 22 years. Twenty thousand people were deployed to work on it. The principal architect was the Iranian architect Istad Usa; it is possible that the pietra dura work was coordinated by an Italian artist. Taj is the salute to the Indian womanhood that till date inspires people to love. In fact the beauty of Taj Mahal has inspired people, poets and painters. No words or pictures can do justice to the loveliness of the Taj. One has to see it to believe it and experience it to enjoy it. Besides the Taj Mahal, Agra boasts of a number of tourist attractions such as Agra Fort, Sikandra, and Itmad-ud Daulah Tomb. Then there are various excursion options also possible from Agra including those to Fatehpur Sikri, Mathura and Vrindavan. The best time to visit the Taj Mahal in Agra is in the winter months from October to March. The summer and the monsoon months are best avoided. There are a number of luxury hotels in Agra that offer views of the Taj Mahal from their rooms. The best of facilities and the most efficient of services may be enjoyed at the luxury hotels around Taj Mahal. Agra, the city of Taj is easily accessible through air, rail and road. Delhi the capital city of India acts as the main gateway to Agra. There are regular flights to Agra. Express trains from Delhi take you to Agra in less than two hours.
